The Honourable MARK A. G. BRANTLEY, Minister of Finance, Statistics, Economic Planning, Human Resources, Industry, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Tourism, Public Utilities and Energy, Foreign Investments, Government Information Service and Nevis Television.
The Honourable Mark A. G. Brantley is a distinguished legal professional and statesman who has served as the Premier of Nevis since December 2017. Born on January 11, 1969, in the village of Hanley’s Road, Nevis, his early life was marked by academic excellence. He attended the Charlestown Secondary School before pursuing higher education at the University of the West Indies, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) with Upper Second Class Honours. His academic journey continued at the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica, where he graduated first in his class and received a Legal Education Certificate of Merit—an honor achieved by only a few in the school's history. He further refined his expertise as a Commonwealth Scholar at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, reading for a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL).
Before his entry into the political arena, Brantley established a formidable reputation as a Senior Counsel (formerly Queen’s Counsel) specializing in high-stakes international commercial litigation. He was a founding partner of the law firm Daniel, Brantley & Associates, where he represented clients in complex disputes across the Eastern Caribbean and as far as Singapore. His legal career saw him admitted to the bar in multiple jurisdictions, including Anguilla, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, and Dominica. This extensive background in the law provided him with a sharp analytical foundation that has characterized his approach to public policy and parliamentary debate.
Brantley’s political career began in earnest in 2006 when he entered the Nevis Island Assembly as a senator for the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM). He quickly rose through the ranks, serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of St. Kitts and Nevis from 2007 to 2015. Following the Team Unity victory in the 2015 federal elections, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and Aviation, a role in which he worked to strengthen the Federation’s international standing and expand its visa-waiver programs. In October 2017, he succeeded the Hon. Vance Amory as the leader of the CCM, leading the party to victory in the local elections later 그해 and assuming office as the fourth Premier of Nevis.
As Premier, Brantley has championed a "Nevis First" philosophy, focusing on sustainable development and economic autonomy. He has been a vocal proponent of the Nevis Geothermal Project, aiming to transition the island toward 100% renewable energy and position it as a leader in Caribbean green technology. His administration is also noted for its modernization of the island's infrastructure and the diversification of its financial services sector. In December 2022, he led the CCM to a second consecutive victory, securing another term as Premier while simultaneously serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the Federal Parliament. Known for his direct and tech-savvy communication style, Brantley remains a central and influential figure in the modern history of the Federation.
