The Honourable ERIC R. EVELYN, Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Natural Resources, Fisheries, Cooperatives, Culture and Housing.
The Honourable Eric R. Evelyn is a distinguished Nevisian statesman, agricultural specialist, and the current Deputy Premier of Nevis. Born and raised in the village of Gingerland, his path to leadership was paved by an extensive 32-year career within the Nevis Island Administration (NIA). A specialist in his field, he holds diplomas in Agriculture from the Eastern Caribbean Institute of Agriculture and Forestry in Trinidad and Agricultural Extension from the University of the West Indies. Before entering the political arena, Evelyn rose through the ranks of the civil service to eventually serve as the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, a role from which he retired in 2017 to pursue elective office.
His political career, under the banner of the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM), began with a victory in the 2017 Nevis Island Assembly election for the St. George’s constituency. Since then, he has held a wide array of critical portfolios, including Culture, Youth, Sports, and Community Development. Following the 2022 elections, his role was elevated to Deputy Premier, where he currently oversees Agriculture, Lands, Natural Resources, Fisheries, Cooperatives, Culture, and Housing. His influence extends to the federal level as well; he was elected to the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly in 2020 and served as the Federal Minister for the Environment and Cooperatives, where he championed regional food security and environmental sustainability.
Evelyn is widely regarded for his deep-rooted connection to his community and his technical approach to governance. He has been a primary advocate for the modernization of the agricultural sector, spearheading initiatives like the island's Broiler Project to reduce food import dependency. Known for his "Gingerlander" pride, he remains a key figure in the preservation of Nevisian heritage, particularly through his oversight of Culturama, the island's premier cultural festival. Often serving as the Acting Premier in the absence of the Premier, Eric Evelyn’s legacy is defined by a transition from a dedicated civil servant to a senior architect of the island's modern political and economic landscape.
