Her Honour Mrs. Hyleeta Liburd, O.B.E., M.H., was sworn in as the Deputy Governor General for Nevis on September 1, 2018, bringing to the office a distinguished legacy of over 39 years in public service. A dedicated educator by profession, Her Honour rose through the ranks of the civil service from a classroom teacher and Headteacher to serve as an Education Officer and, ultimately, the Principal Education Officer for the Nevis Island Administration. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Miami and has been a cornerstone of the Nevisian community through her extensive work in youth mentorship and church leadership. Her lifelong commitment to nation-building has been recognized with several prestigious accolades, including the Saint Kitts and Nevis Medal of Honour in 2005 and her appointment as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 2020. As the representative of the Crown in Nevis, Her Honour continues to serve with the same integrity, humility, and devotion to excellence that defined her nearly four-decade career in the Federation’s educational system.
The Governor's House at Bath Plain in Nevis is a significant historic landmark that was originally constructed in 1909 to serve as the official residence for the island's Wardens and, later, Administrators, replacing the former residence at Queen's House. After the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis gained independence in 1983, the building became the official residence and office of the Deputy Governor-General for Nevis, and it notably hosted Queen Elizabeth II during her visit in 1966. Despite falling into a state of disrepair, a significant EC$1.6 million restoration project, completed in the late 2010s, used imported Greenheart wood and was careful to maintain the original architectural integrity of the century-old structure, ensuring that the house remains an operational and symbolic center of the island's administration and history.
