Premier Brantley Highlights Urgency of Caribbean Energy Independence at CREF 2026

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 16, 2026)- Premier of Nevis and Minister of Energy and Utilities, the Honourable Mark Brantley, has called for greater Caribbean energy independence, highlighting the need to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels amid global price volatility and geopolitical uncertainty. Premier Brantley made the remarks on Thursday, October 15, at the Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF) 2026 in Panama, where he participated as a panellist in a session titled “The CREF Ministerial: What Will Caribbean Governments Do Next?” During the discussion, he provided an update on Nevis’ geothermal energy project and outlined the steps needed to reduce the island’s vulnerability to fossil fuel price fluctuations driven by wars and other geopolitical developments. For Nevis, geothermal energy remains central to the Nevis Island Administration’s (NIA) strategy to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. The planned 30-megawatt geothermal power plant is intended to provide a more sustainable source of electricity, reduce exposure to international fuel-price fluctuations and strengthen the island’s long-term energy security. CREF 2026, held October 14 to 16, brought together more than 400 participants from over 40 countries, including government ministers and senior officials, utility executives, regulators, project developers, investors, financiers, multilateral institutions and technology providers. The forum provided a platform for regional and international stakeholders to explore investment opportunities, strengthen partnerships and discuss practical approaches to addressing the Caribbean’s energy challenges. The agenda focused on energy security and sovereignty, financing renewable energy projects, mobilising private investment and improving project delivery. Delegates also examined the role of international partnerships and multilateral financing in advancing energy initiatives across small island states. Other key areas of discussion included modernising electricity grids, strengthening utility sustainability, expanding energy storage, advancing geothermal development and integrating distributed renewable energy technologies. Participants also explored ways to improve the resilience of Caribbean power systems against hurricanes and other climate-related threats while maintaining affordable and reliable electricity. A recurring theme was the need for Caribbean governments to balance energy transition targets with the financial sustainability of utilities and the cost of electricity to consumers.

Honourable Eric Evelyn Deputy Premier and Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Cooperatives Nevis Island Administration World Food Day Address 2026 Fellow Citizens and Residents, It is my distinct privilege to address you as Minister of Agriculture in the Nevis Island Administration on the observance of World Food Day 2026.  World Food Day is a United Nations designated occasion to unite in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.  World Food Day is celebrated every year on October 16 to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (F.A.O.) in 1945. The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with hunger and food security. This year, we celebrate World Food Day under the theme “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow”.  The theme is both fitting and timely as we as a Ministry and Department continue our efforts at innovation in a dynamic and changing environment. Agricultural practices being utilized today are far different from those employed even when I began my tenure in the Department of Agriculture forty-one years ago. Times have changed and we must endeavour to be mindful of that, and to adapt to new technology. As we continue efforts at food security and providing nourishment to our population, forefront in our minds should be the constant need to innovate. I believe that we have done an excellent job at innovation over the years, but that trend must continue. There has been innovation in practically every aspect of farming and fishing, and we have witnessed tremendous results. Over the years we have seen innovation from land preparation to harvesting to value addition and Agro processing. There have been changes in the varieties of crops we plant, irrigation practices, pest control measures, open field versus shade house production and even harvesting and storage methods. In fishing we have seen changes in the types and sizes of fishing vessels, in fishing gear and even the making of fish traps. I believe that this year’s World Food Day theme is calling us to innovate even more as the field of Agriculture faces more and more challenges. Climate change has undoubtedly become one of the industry’s major challenges and requires climate smart practices to combat its devastating effects. We have made significant strides in employing climate smart practices but the work has to continue. If we are to nourish our population tomorrow, then we must intensify our efforts at innovation today. The Ministry and Department of Agriculture that I am privileged to lead will continue to innovate and as we do so we will continue to work hand in hand with our famers and fishers to ensure that they are also taking the lead. I take this opportunity to encourage our farmers and fishers to be mindful of the need to innovate in order to take advantage of the growing demand for more local and wholesome products. As we celebrate World Food Day later this week, a number of activities have been planned and they include: The Department of Agriculture has crafted an initiative dubbed “Lend A Hand- Crop Farmers Assistance”. This involves extension officers actually assisting farmers and backyard gardeners with hands on, on farm activities. The initiative, which started last week, is continuing this week and include farmers, backyard gardeners and schools. Assistance has been provided to the Gingerland Secondary School in its rehabilitation of the shade house, and on Wednesday 14th farmers in District one will benefit. On Thursday 15th the Department will host a livestock forage bank and solar system demo in collaboration with one of our livestock farmers in the Low Ground/Cherry Garden area. Then on World Food Day on Friday 16th, there will be a radio quiz on VON Radio during the morning. That day has also been dubbed “Eat a Fruit Day”. Persons are encouraged to eat at least one local fruit that day. You are also encouraged to take a photo and post it and you can win prizes from the Department of Agriculture. I would once again commit my Ministry and Department to lead the charge in innovation as we seek to nourish our population tomorrow. Farmers, backyard gardeners and fishers, we are depending on you for your collaboration and support. I continue to encourage us all to eat more of what we grow and grow more of what we eat. NIA Maintains Regular Payments to NEVLEC for Government’s Electricity Consumption

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 14, 2026)– Premier of Nevis and Minister of Finance and Utilities, the Honourable Mark Brantley, says the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) continues to make regular payments to the state-owned Nevis Electricity Company Ltd. (NEVLEC) for electricity consumed across government ministries and institutions. The Premier made the disclosure while responding to a question from Opposition Parliamentarian the Honourable Dr. Janice Daniel Hodge during the most recent sitting of the Nevis Island Assembly regarding the amount owed by the Government to NEVLEC. “According to the Ministry of Finance of the Nevis Island Administration, the state of indebtedness to NEVLEC as of August 31st, 2026, by the Nevis Island Administration is a cumulative debt since the advent of NEVLEC 26 years ago of $38.5 million. “So the accumulated debt for electricity usage to NEVLEC as of August 31st, 2026, according to the Ministry of Finance is $38.5 million.” The Premier further disclosed that NEVLEC’s records reflected a significantly higher outstanding balance of $62,56,000, an accounting discrepancy of approximately $24 million between the two entities. “In the interest of accurate information to this House, it turns out that there is an accounting discrepancy between the NIA and NEVLEC. I am to advise that there has to be a reconciliation done, because it appears that NEVLEC was not crediting amounts paid by the NIA to its usage but rather was crediting those amounts only to the fuel search charge. “And so I have asked the leadership of the Ministry and the leadership of NEVLEC to get together to reconcile the numbers so that we can have a clearer understanding.” Premier Brantley also explained that the NIA has been paying NEVLEC an average of $500,000 monthly since 2022, when the fuel surcharge was removed from electricity bills for domestic consumers. These payments amount to approximately $6 million annually. He assured the Assembly that he would provide an update on the figures once the reconciliation exercise has been completed, allowing for a clearer understanding of the outstanding balance.

The conference opened on Tuesday, October 13, at the Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park, where the Acting Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Eric Evelyn, welcomed participants and expressed appreciation that the organisation had chosen to host the event in both Nevis and St. Kitts. “This is an initiative that I fully endorse; that my administration fully endorses. It’s always good to do good and that is what we are promoting here at the conference. “I believe that this conference is very timely because we are living in a world today where there are too many people doing bad deeds and we have to try our best to change that, in St. Kitts and Nevis and throughout the world. So I am hopeful that from this conference we can spread the word more that we need to do good,” he said. Hon. Evelyn observed that volunteerism, which was once a prominent feature of community life, has become less common in recent years, a trend he noted extends beyond Nevis to the wider Caribbean and the rest of the world. He encouraged participants and the public to embrace simple acts of kindness, including cleaning their surroundings and visiting the sick and elderly. The 2026 gathering marks the fourth regional conference in Good Deeds Day’s 20-year history and the first time the event is being held in St. Kitts and Nevis. Kaynan Rabino, Chief Executive Officer of Good Deeds Day, said the conference brings together people from different Caribbean islands who share a commitment to improving their communities and building a better, more resilient future. “What we’re really doing in the end game is building community resilience, and this is something you need in the islands, because of challenges you face here. Premier Brantley Welcomes Kosovo Ambassador, Looks to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

Premier Brantley welcomed Ambassador Xhemaili to Nevis, recalling his role as Minister of Foreign Affairs when St. Kitts and Nevis formally established diplomatic relations with Kosovo in 2016 and subsequently concluded a visa-waiver agreement between the two countries. Reflecting on those diplomatic milestones, Premier Brantley expressed optimism about exploring further areas of collaboration to strengthen relations between the two countries. “We are very happy we had those diplomatic breakthroughs back in 2016 and now almost a decade later you are here to see us. I feel it’s a good opportunity for us to discuss new ways in which we can cooperate, in which our two countries can do more together. “So I welcome you to Nevis, to St. Kitts and Nevis and I welcome you to the Caribbean. Nevis Solid Waste Authority Prepares to Ship Fourth Container of Recyclables

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 08, 2026)– The Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) is preparing to ship its fourth container of recyclable plastics off island, marking another milestone in the Nevis Island Administration’s (NIA) efforts to improve waste management, promote recycling and protect the environment. On Thursday, October 08, Minister of Health, the Honourable Senator Jahnel Nisbett, was present for the loading of the 40-foot container at the Recycling Facility at the Government’s landfill at Long Point. She expressed appreciation to the public for its positive response to the Administration’s recycling initiatives and encouraged residents to continue participating in the programme. “We’re here to witness the shipping out of yet another container full of plastic recyclable materials that have been baled here at the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority and we’re really proud of this accomplishment. This is the fourth container that we’ll be shipping out here from Nevis and this will be going to the Dominican Republic. “This project is really helping to reduce the amount of waste here on the island as well as giving new life to these materials. So we continue to encourage individuals to reuse and reduce but when you do use, please recycle. This is the end product that we’re shipping out and we are hopeful that these can definitely be turned into something that is useful, for another item that we can use in our daily life,” she said. Senator Nisbett also highlighted the practical benefits of recycling, noting that the pink shirts worn by members of the group were each made from 12 recycled plastic bottles, demonstrating how discarded materials can be repurposed into useful products. The recycling initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) as part of a wider project across the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. His Excellency Edward Ling-Wen Tao, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to St. Kitts and Nevis, was present for the loading of the container. “I’m very happy to be here with Minister Nisbett and all the friends from Nevis for our latest shipment of collected plastic from Nevis. I think it’s been five years since our bilateral programme has been in progress and I’m happy to see a lot of tangible results coming out from both St. Kitts and Nevis. “Now we have established the collection stations for different communities and we have already educated the public about the importance of recycling your plastics and so I’m very pleased to see a big result, a very good result here which is the eleventh overall shipment of plastics out of St. Kitts and Nevis. I urge all the public to continue your recycling practice, make it a daily habit and reduce the garbage on the island, which is good for your generation and the generations to come,” he said. The container is scheduled to leave Nevis next week. Residents are encouraged to follow the NSWMA’s social media platforms for updates on the recycling collection schedule for their respective communities and to ensure that recyclable plastics are properly sorted and prepared for collection.

Today, October 9, we join the international community in observing World Post Day 2026, under the theme, “One Postal Network. Infinite Possibilities.” The theme speaks to the changing role of postal services in a world that is increasingly digital, connected and dependent on the efficient movement of goods and information. For generations, the Post Office has been an important part of life in Nevis. It has connected families, supported businesses, delivered letters and packages, and provided a trusted link between our island and the wider world. However, the way we communicate, conduct business and receive goods is changing rapidly. People now communicate instantly across borders, online shopping has become part of everyday life, and businesses- large and small- can reach customers far beyond their immediate communities. These changes have also raised expectations for postal services that are efficient, reliable, secure and convenient. Our postal service must therefore evolve alongside the needs of the people we serve. Here on Nevis, the postal network is more than a system for receiving and dispatching letters and packages. It is part of the infrastructure that supports our economy, connects our communities and creates opportunities for our people. The growth of e-commerce, in particular, presents significant possibilities. A small business owner in Nevis should be able to produce a quality local product, market it online and have confidence that it can reach a customer elsewhere in the Caribbean or beyond. At the same time, our residents should be able to access goods from international markets and receive them through a postal service that is dependable and responsive. Technology can help us achieve this through improved package tracking, more efficient processing, better communication with customers and greater access to digital services. As Minister responsible for Posts in the Nevis Island Administration, I recognize that modernization must form an important part of the future of our postal service. But modernization is not only about technology. It is also about our people. Our postal employees must have the training, tools and working environment necessary to provide quality service. NIA HR Retirement Seminar Prepares Public Servants for Life After Service

The Ministry recently hosted a retirement seminar for prospective retirees from the public service. The seminar was designed to provide practical information and guidance to officers as they prepare for retirement and make a successful and informed transition into the next stage of their lives. Premier and Minister of Human Resources, the Honourable Mark Brantley, said the sessions are intended not only to help participants understand their retirement benefits, but also to provide practical guidance on managing and safeguarding their resources as they transition into retirement. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that civil servants are well informed and supported both during their careers and as they move into the next phase of their lives. “These sessions are of critical importance, so I want you all to see them as useful to you, giving you valuable information. They will tell you about your benefits, your pension benefits, your gratuity, about various mechanisms that are in place to assist you as you transition to the next phase.” Premier Brantley assured the participants that the Government would continue to educate and engage civil servants to help ensure they have rewarding careers and are equally prepared for life after the civil service. Nevis Strengthens Financial Services Regulatory Regime with Passage of Four Bills

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 6, 2026)- The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) continues to strengthen the regulatory framework for its growing financial services sector with the passage of four pieces of legislation in the Nevis Island Assembly on Tuesday, October 6. Minister of Finance and Premier the Honourable Mark Brantley piloted the four bills through the Assembly, noting that the government is committed to ensuring that Nevis’ regulatory framework remains fit for purpose. He introduced the Nevis Limited Partnership Ordinance (Amendment) Bill, 2026, for first reading. The Bill subsequently received second and third readings and was passed. Premier Brantley also led the second and third readings of the Companies Ordinance (Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Nevis Business Corporation Ordinance (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Nevis Limited Liability Company Ordinance (Amendment) Bill, 2026, all of which were passed. He said legislation had been passed to enhance the Nevis Limited Partnership, Nevis International Business Company, local company and, most recently, the Nevis Limited Liability Company, noting that while each was a distinct business structure, all formed an integral part of Nevis’ financial services sector. “We as a jurisdiction and as a government are seeking to monitor, regulate, and ensure that all entities, and I emphasize all entities, are operating in this jurisdiction in accordance with law, in accordance with the highest possible international standards… “We cannot talk about growth and development and expansion of the sector unless we are also talking about an effective regulatory regime. Regulation is now a critical part of any world-class financial services sector. In fact, it’s a critical part of any business nowadays, and we are very alive to that and we are making the necessary steps and putting in place what we need to do, including Madam President coming here from time to time for necessary amendments to strengthen the regime that exists.” Premier Brantley also thanked Opposition Members the Honourable Cleone Stapleton-Simmonds and the Honourable Dr. Janice Daniel-Hodge for their contributions to the debate.

Premier Brantley Meets with Iceland Drilling, COWI on Geothermal Drilling Preparations

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 6, 2026)– Premier of Nevis and Minister of Energy, the Honourable Mark Brantley, received an update on preparations for geothermal drilling on Nevis during a meeting with representatives from Iceland Drilling and COWI, an international engineering consultancy, at his office at Pinney’s Estate on Tuesday. Premier Brantley met with Thorri Bjorn Gunnarsson, Civil Engineer with COWI, and Egill Arnar Sigurthorsson, Project Manager at Iceland Drilling. Also attending the meeting were Nelson Ald Stapleton, General Manager of the Nevis Electricity Company Limited (NEVLEC), and Wakely Daniel, Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Ministry. Premier Brantley said the meeting provided an opportunity to assess the project’s progress, address outstanding challenges and explore solutions to accelerate its implementation. He noted that the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) and all other parties recognise the need for the project to advance expeditiously, given its potential to be transformative for Nevis. “Where we are now is that the civil works need to be done, the water works need to be done, and so we’re trying to get a workaround bearing in mind that the various multinational agencies that we engage with, the funding agencies, that they sometimes have very lengthy processes and those processes are in fact anathema to us being able to move this project forward at pace.” He said the successful execution of the project could significantly advance the economic development of Nevis and the Federation. Mr. Stapleton described this renewable energy initiative as having the potential to be the “project of the decade for the region” and said NEVLEC is doing its part to help ensure its successful implementation. During their visit to the island, the representatives conducted an inspection of the geothermal drilling site at Hamilton ahead of the commencement of civil works for the well pad. The work is intended to ensure that the site is ready to receive the drilling rig, which is expected to be mobilised to Nevis in the near future. COWI is undertaking the civil works for the well pad, while Iceland Drilling Company will be responsible for carrying out the drilling.

Nevis’ Rondre Daniel heads to CTO Regional Tourism Youth Congress in Guyana

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 02, 2026)– Nevis’ Youth Junior Minister of Tourism, Mr. Rondre Daniel, will travel to Guyana on Sunday, October 4, to represent the island at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Regional Tourism Youth Congress on Thursday, October 8. Daniel, a student of the Charlestown Secondary School, will join young tourism representatives from across the Caribbean at the regional event, which forms part of the CTO’s State of the Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC) 2026 being held in Georgetown from October 5 to 9. The Youth Congress brings together students between the ages of 14 and 17, each serving as a Junior Minister or Commissioner of Tourism for their respective destination. Ahead of his departure, Daniel met with Premier and Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Mark Brantley, at his office on Wednesday. Premier Brantley said the Nevis Island Administration values opportunities that expose young people to experiences that can contribute to their personal and professional development. He encouraged Daniel to focus on giving his best and representing Nevis well, while making the most of the opportunity to engage with young tourism representatives from across the region. “If you can win, we’ll be very happy. But what we are most happy about is that you do your best and that you represent to the best of your ability. If you walk out of that room and from that SOTIC experience and you are confident that you’ve done your best, then that is enough. “So I want to congratulate you and wish you the very best as you go off to Guyana to represent the people of Nevis.” Daniel thanked the Premier for his encouragement and asked for the continued prayers and support of the people of Nevis as he seeks to become the fourth representative from Nevis to capture the regional Youth Tourism Minister title. “I thank Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for allowing me to be able to have this opportunity. I just want everyone to continue to keep me in your prayers and know that I will represent well.” Daniel emerged as the winner of the 2026 Bank of Nevis Tourism Youth Congress in May, earning the title of Nevis Junior Youth Tourism Minister and the opportunity to represent the island at the CTO Regional Tourism Youth Congress. His winning presentation focused on cultural industries innovation and outlined strategies aimed at strengthening Nevis’ tourism product through culture and creativity. He will travel to Guyana accompanied by his mother, Reverend Trecia Daniel; teacher chaperone, Mrs. Lencia Percival; and Ms. Akina Anthony of the Ministry of Tourism. The CTO Regional Tourism Youth Congress is one of the organisation’s signature youth development initiatives. It provides young people with an opportunity to research tourism issues, present innovative ideas and engage with their counterparts from across the Caribbean while developing critical thinking, communication and leadership skills. During the SOTIC, Daniel will also participate in a welcome reception, Future Leaders Forum, a Youth Congress social, two workshops, a destination tour, and a cultural night.
