Another Movie Filmed in Nevis Heads to US Theatres

NIA  /  0 comments

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 23, 2026)- Nevis continues to strengthen its reputation as a destination for international film production, with the release of the trailer for Apples & Airplanes, a romantic comedy filmed on the island and scheduled to reach theatres in the United States beginning in November. The film is the latest production to showcase Nevis on screen, featuring a number of the island’s iconic locations as well as lesser-known scenic spots. Its upcoming theatrical release presents another opportunity to promote Nevis internationally while demonstrating the potential of the film industry to support tourism, local businesses and economic development. Honourable Mark Brantley, Premier of Nevis, said the release reflects the progress being made towards the Nevis Island Administration’s vision of developing a film industry on the island. “During the Covid 19 pandemic the NIA set about creating a film industry from the ground up in Nevis. We continue to pursue that objective and this movie hitting theatres soon in the United States is further evidence that the vision of our government being realized.” The Premier noted that film productions also provide opportunities to expand Nevis’ international visibility and create benefits for the local community. “Each film production provides an opportunity to introduce Nevis to new audiences around the world, showcasing the island’s distinctive character and creating valuable exposure beyond traditional tourism marketing. As more productions choose Nevis, we see opportunities to build local capacity, engage Nevisian talent and support local businesses.” Apples & Airplanes is directed by Camilo Diaz Caro and written by Sarafina King, who also stars alongside Jake Lockett and Dominic Burgess. The film is scheduled to premiere at a theatre in Los Angeles on November 11, 2026, before beginning a wider theatrical run across the United States from January through March 2027, with screenings planned in several states. The upcoming release follows other major productions filmed on the island, including Terry McMillan Presents: Paradise with You, a Lifetime movie scheduled to premiere in Fall 2026 as part of the network’s Love of a Lifetime slate. Starring award-winning actor Taye Diggs, the production was filmed entirely on location in Nevis and features the island’s secluded beaches, historic estates and lush volcanic landscapes. Together, these and a number of previous productions are helping to raise Nevis’ profile as a location for international filmmaking, placing the island before wider audiences and reinforcing its appeal as a distinctive Caribbean destination.

ABC News: Tiny Caribbean island of Nevis to restore Alexander Hamilton museum with US funds

NIA  /  0 comments

St. Kitts and Nevis has received a financial boost in honor of one of its most famous sons, Alexander Hamilton, who went on to become a founding father of the United States and America’s first treasury secretary By The Associated Press October 21, 2026 Tiny Caribbean island of Nevis to restore Alexander Hamilton museum with US funds – ABC News St. Kitts and Nevis has received a financial boost in honor of one of its most famous sons, Alexander Hamilton, who went on to become a founding father of the United States and America’s first treasury secretary. The U.S. government this month awarded $245,000 to restore the home where some believe Hamilton once lived as the U.S. celebrates its 250th anniversary.https://amp.cntxcdm.com/amp-embed/index.html?playerId=ps_94a77ea9-06c2-4b60-a975-daa5b45dbe79&url=https%3A%2F%2Fabcnews.com%2Famp%2FInternational%2FwireStory%2Ftiny-caribbean-island-nevis-restore-alexander-hamilton-museum-137459726&isSafariOrIos=false Hamilton was born on the tiny eastern Caribbean island of Nevis in the mid-18th century and spent his childhood living at his adopted father’s home in Charlestown. The 17th-century Georgian stone building is now Hamilton House, a museum that houses documents from the famous forefather’s early years and features exhibits honoring other Caribbean personalities. But it has demanded constant repairs: time and salty air have damaged the woodwork. Nevis Premier Mark Brantley told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he’s grateful for the funds. “We have tried valiantly as locals to preserve these very important historical monuments,” he said. Despite Hamilton having lived only the early part of his childhood in Nevis, the premier believes his legacy is inspiring. “Hamilton is significant because I think it’s a demonstration of what a small island like Nevis, a little dot in the ocean, can contribute to the founding of the greatest nation in the world, the United States,” Brantley said. The two-story, Georgian stone building that was originally built around 1680 was destroyed by an earthquake in 1840 and was last restored in 1983. Brantley said the restoration work is important to both the U.S. and Nevis: “Hamilton remains, I think, an iconic figure for us and a figure that we can look at his legacy and inspire our own people to achieve and to know that greatness is available for all of us.”

NIA annual seminar reinforces professionalism and service standards for Nevis taxi operators

NIA  /  0 comments

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 21, 2026)- The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Ministry of Tourism hosted its annual refresher seminar for certified taxi operators on Tuesday, October 20, providing an opportunity for participants to refresh their skills, reinforce professional standards and enhance the quality of service offered to visitors ahead of the official start of the 2026/2027 tourist season. The seminar, held at the Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park, brought together approximately 40 taxi operators for sessions on customer service excellence, taxi regulations, Nevis’ history and the art of storytelling. Vanessa Webbe, Product Development Manager in the Ministry of Tourism, welcomed participants during the opening ceremony and highlighted their important role in the island’s tourism industry. She noted that taxi operators work at the intersection of transportation and tourism and are often among the first people visitors encounter, placing them in a unique position to create a lasting positive impression of Nevis. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism John Hanley thanked the operators for their continued contribution to Nevis’ tourism industry. He reminded them that their conduct and service play a significant role in shaping visitors’ experiences and influencing their overall impression of the island, urging them to maintain the highest standards of professionalism. “Of the first and most important people visitors will meet when they arrive will be you our taxi operators. You may be the first to offer them a glimpse into our way of life and the first to help them feel welcome. In many instances you may be the last people they see before departing. That makes you much more than drivers- you are destination ambassadors, story tellers, representatives of our people and partners in the development of Nevis as a premiere tourism destination.” Mr. Hanley also underscored the importance of honesty, integrity and adherence to established taxi rates, reminding operators that visitors must feel confident that they are receiving fair and reliable service. “Respecting the official taxi rates is not optional. It is a fundamental obligation of professional service…They should never have to worry about being overcharged, misled, or taken advantage of. “Every professional interaction contributes to the image of our island. The impression you leave can influence whether visitors recommend Nevis to their friends, return for another vacation or share positive experiences with the wider world. That is why the standards we discuss today matter so much.” Participants were further reminded of the importance of courtesy, punctuality and maintaining a professional approach in their interactions with visitors, all of which contribute to a positive visitor experience and the island’s reputation as a tourism destination. The seminar featured presentations by Greg Phillip, who shared practical strategies for delivering professional, welcoming and memorable customer service; Joanne Manners, who addressed taxi regulations; and Leonard Stapleton, who explored Nevis’ history and the art of storytelling. Through these sessions, operators had the opportunity to revisit essential information, strengthen their customer service skills and build on their knowledge of the island’s heritage, enabling them to provide visitors with more informative and engaging experiences. The programme also allowed taxi operators to ask questions, raise concerns and engage with facilitators on matters relevant to their work. Senior members of staff from the Ministry of Tourism were also in attendance. The annual refresher seminar forms part of the Ministry of Tourism’s ongoing efforts to support taxi operators in maintaining professional standards and delivering quality service as Nevis prepares to welcome visitors during the 2026/2027 tourist season.

Premier Brantley Highlights Urgency of Caribbean Energy Independence at CREF 2026

NIA  /  0 comments

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 16, 2026)- Premier of Nevis and Minister of Energy and Utilities, the Honourable Mark Brantley, has called for greater Caribbean energy independence, highlighting the need to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels amid global price volatility and geopolitical uncertainty. Premier Brantley made the remarks on Thursday, October 15, at the Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF) 2026 in Panama, where he participated as a panellist in a session titled “The CREF Ministerial: What Will Caribbean Governments Do Next?” During the discussion, he provided an update on Nevis’ geothermal energy project and outlined the steps needed to reduce the island’s vulnerability to fossil fuel price fluctuations driven by wars and other geopolitical developments. For Nevis, geothermal energy remains central to the Nevis Island Administration’s (NIA) strategy to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. The planned 30-megawatt geothermal power plant is intended to provide a more sustainable source of electricity, reduce exposure to international fuel-price fluctuations and strengthen the island’s long-term energy security. CREF 2026, held October 14 to 16, brought together more than 400 participants from over 40 countries, including government ministers and senior officials, utility executives, regulators, project developers, investors, financiers, multilateral institutions and technology providers. The forum provided a platform for regional and international stakeholders to explore investment opportunities, strengthen partnerships and discuss practical approaches to addressing the Caribbean’s energy challenges. The agenda focused on energy security and sovereignty, financing renewable energy projects, mobilising private investment and improving project delivery. Delegates also examined the role of international partnerships and multilateral financing in advancing energy initiatives across small island states. Other key areas of discussion included modernising electricity grids, strengthening utility sustainability, expanding energy storage, advancing geothermal development and integrating distributed renewable energy technologies. Participants also explored ways to improve the resilience of Caribbean power systems against hurricanes and other climate-related threats while maintaining affordable and reliable electricity. A recurring theme was the need for Caribbean governments to balance energy transition targets with the financial sustainability of utilities and the cost of electricity to consumers.

Hon. Eric Evelyn Delivers World Food Day 2026 Address

NIA  /  0 comments

Honourable Eric Evelyn Deputy Premier and Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Cooperatives Nevis Island Administration World Food Day Address 2026 Fellow Citizens and Residents, It is my distinct privilege to address you as Minister of Agriculture in the Nevis Island Administration on the observance of World Food Day 2026.  World Food Day is a United Nations designated occasion to unite in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.  World Food Day is celebrated every year on October 16 to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (F.A.O.) in 1945. The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with hunger and food security. This year, we celebrate World Food Day under the theme “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow”.  The theme is both fitting and timely as we as a Ministry and Department continue our efforts at innovation in a dynamic and changing environment. Agricultural practices being utilized today are far different from those employed even when I began my tenure in the Department of Agriculture forty-one years ago. Times have changed and we must endeavour to be mindful of that, and to adapt to new technology. As we continue efforts at food security and providing nourishment to our population, forefront in our minds should be the constant need to innovate. I believe that we have done an excellent job at innovation over the years, but that trend must continue. There has been innovation in practically every aspect of farming and fishing, and we have witnessed tremendous results. Over the years we have seen innovation from land preparation to harvesting to value addition and Agro processing. There have been changes in the varieties of crops we plant, irrigation practices, pest control measures, open field versus shade house production and even harvesting and storage methods. In fishing we have seen changes in the types and sizes of fishing vessels, in fishing gear and even the making of fish traps. I believe that this year’s World Food Day theme is calling us to innovate even more as the field of Agriculture faces more and more challenges. Climate change has undoubtedly become one of the industry’s major challenges and requires climate smart practices to combat its devastating effects. We have made significant strides in employing climate smart practices but the work has to continue. If we are to nourish our population tomorrow, then we must intensify our efforts at innovation today. The Ministry and Department of Agriculture that I am privileged to lead will continue to innovate and as we do so we will continue to work hand in hand with our famers and fishers to ensure that they are also taking the lead. I take this opportunity to encourage our farmers and fishers to be mindful of the need to innovate in order to take advantage of the growing demand for more local and wholesome products. As we celebrate World Food Day later this week, a number of activities have been planned and they include: The Department of Agriculture has crafted an initiative dubbed “Lend A Hand- Crop Farmers Assistance”. This involves extension officers actually assisting farmers and backyard gardeners with hands on, on farm activities. The initiative, which started last week, is continuing this week and include farmers, backyard gardeners and schools. Assistance has been provided to the Gingerland Secondary School in its rehabilitation of the shade house, and on Wednesday 14th farmers in District one will benefit. On Thursday 15th the Department will host a livestock forage bank and solar system demo in collaboration with one of our livestock farmers in the Low Ground/Cherry Garden area. Then on World Food Day on Friday 16th, there will be a radio quiz on VON Radio during the morning. That day has also been dubbed “Eat a Fruit Day”. Persons are encouraged to eat at least one local fruit that day. You are also encouraged to take a photo and post it and you can win prizes from the Department of Agriculture. I would once again commit my Ministry and Department to lead the charge in innovation as we seek to nourish our population tomorrow. Farmers, backyard gardeners and fishers, we are depending on you for your collaboration and support. I continue to encourage us all to eat more of what we grow and grow more of what we eat. I take this opportunity to wish all, and especially the dedicated staff at the Ministry and Department of Agriculture as well as our hardworking farmers and fishers, Happy World Food Day 2026. Thank you and God Bless

NIA Maintains Regular Payments to NEVLEC for Government’s Electricity Consumption

NIA  /  0 comments

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 14, 2026)– Premier of Nevis and Minister of Finance and Utilities, the Honourable Mark Brantley, says the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) continues to make regular payments to the state-owned Nevis Electricity Company Ltd. (NEVLEC) for electricity consumed across government ministries and institutions. The Premier made the disclosure while responding to a question from Opposition Parliamentarian the Honourable Dr. Janice Daniel Hodge during the most recent sitting of the Nevis Island Assembly regarding the amount owed by the Government to NEVLEC. “According to the Ministry of Finance of the Nevis Island Administration, the state of indebtedness to NEVLEC as of August 31st, 2026, by the Nevis Island Administration is a cumulative debt since the advent of NEVLEC 26 years ago of $38.5 million. “So the accumulated debt for electricity usage to NEVLEC as of August 31st, 2026, according to the Ministry of Finance is $38.5 million.” The Premier further disclosed that NEVLEC’s records reflected a significantly higher outstanding balance of $62,56,000, an accounting discrepancy of approximately $24 million between the two entities. “In the interest of accurate information to this House, it turns out that there is an accounting discrepancy between the NIA and NEVLEC. I am to advise that there has to be a reconciliation done, because it appears that NEVLEC was not crediting amounts paid by the NIA to its usage but rather was crediting those amounts only to the fuel search charge. “And so I have asked the leadership of the Ministry and the leadership of NEVLEC to get together to reconcile the numbers so that we can have a clearer understanding.” Premier Brantley also explained that the NIA has been paying NEVLEC an average of $500,000 monthly since 2022, when the fuel surcharge was removed from electricity bills for domestic consumers. These payments amount to approximately $6 million annually. He assured the Assembly that he would provide an update on the figures once the reconciliation exercise has been completed, allowing for a clearer understanding of the outstanding balance.

Nevis Welcomes Regional Delegates for Good Deeds Day Caribbean Conference 2026

NIA  /  0 comments

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 13, 2026)– Nevis is hosting the Good Deeds Day Caribbean Regional Conference 2026, bringing together delegates from across the Caribbean and beyond to promote volunteerism, strengthen community resilience and inspire positive change. The conference opened on Tuesday, October 13, at the Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park, where the Acting Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Eric Evelyn, welcomed participants and expressed appreciation that the organisation had chosen to host the event in both Nevis and St. Kitts. “This is an initiative that I fully endorse; that my administration fully endorses. It’s always good to do good and that is what we are promoting here at the conference. “I believe that this conference is very timely because we are living in a world today where there are too many people doing bad deeds and we have to try our best to change that, in St. Kitts and Nevis and throughout the world. So I am hopeful that from this conference we can spread the word more that we need to do good,” he said. Hon. Evelyn observed that volunteerism, which was once a prominent feature of community life, has become less common in recent years, a trend he noted extends beyond Nevis to the wider Caribbean and the rest of the world. He encouraged participants and the public to embrace simple acts of kindness, including cleaning their surroundings and visiting the sick and elderly. The 2026 gathering marks the fourth regional conference in Good Deeds Day’s 20-year history and the first time the event is being held in St. Kitts and Nevis. Kaynan Rabino, Chief Executive Officer of Good Deeds Day, said the conference brings together people from different Caribbean islands who share a commitment to improving their communities and building a better, more resilient future. “What we’re really doing in the end game is building community resilience, and this is something you need in the islands, because of challenges you face here. The challenges faced are not just during disaster, we face challenges in everyday life. “I believe if we push more doing good, more volunteering, we build more resilience communities. So we must look at the end game, helping with issues now but also look at the long term and that’s what we are trying to de here in the conference. I’m so happy that we’ve built this Good Deeds Day to help encourage and inspire people not just here in the islands but all over the world,” he said. He also welcomed the growing collaboration among Caribbean islands, noting that more territories are joining the movement and working together to advance initiatives that benefit their communities. Mr. Rabino thanked the Government and other partners for their hospitality and support in facilitating the conference. Also delivering remarks at the opening ceremony were Andia Ravariere, Chief Executive Officer of the Nevis Tourism Authority (NTA); Reverend Trecia Daniel; Tamecia Lestrade; and Diane Felicien. The conference commenced on Monday with a welcome dinner and hotel stay on St. Kitts. Delegates moved to Nevis for a full programme of sessions running from Tuesday through Thursday. Activities will culminate with a Nevis Cultural Night on Thursday, October 15, before participants depart the Federation on Friday. Good Deeds Day is a global movement involving millions of people and thousands of organisations across 115 countries. It brings together individuals and groups committed to creating positive change in their communities and contributing to a better world.
