Nevis Solid Waste Authority Prepares to Ship Fourth Container of Recyclables

NIA  /  0 comments

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 08, 2026)– The Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) is preparing to ship its fourth container of recyclable plastics off island, marking another milestone in the Nevis Island Administration’s (NIA) efforts to improve waste management, promote recycling and protect the environment. On Thursday, October 08, Minister of Health, the Honourable Senator Jahnel Nisbett, was present for the loading of the 40-foot container at the Recycling Facility at the Government’s landfill at Long Point. She expressed appreciation to the public for its positive response to the Administration’s recycling initiatives and encouraged residents to continue participating in the programme. “We’re here to witness the shipping out of yet another container full of plastic recyclable materials that have been baled here at the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority and we’re really proud of this accomplishment. This is the fourth container that we’ll be shipping out here from Nevis and this will be going to the Dominican Republic. “This project is really helping to reduce the amount of waste here on the island as well as giving new life to these materials. So we continue to encourage individuals to reuse and reduce but when you do use, please recycle. This is the end product that we’re shipping out and we are hopeful that these can definitely be turned into something that is useful, for another item that we can use in our daily life,” she said. Senator Nisbett also highlighted the practical benefits of recycling, noting that the pink shirts worn by members of the group were each made from 12 recycled plastic bottles, demonstrating how discarded materials can be repurposed into useful products. The recycling initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) as part of a wider project across the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. His Excellency Edward Ling-Wen Tao, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to St. Kitts and Nevis, was present for the loading of the container. “I’m very happy to be here with Minister Nisbett and all the friends from Nevis for our latest shipment of collected plastic from Nevis. I think it’s been five years since our bilateral programme has been in progress and I’m happy to see a lot of tangible results coming out from both St. Kitts and Nevis. “Now we have established the collection stations for different communities and we have already educated the public about the importance of recycling your plastics and so I’m very pleased to see a big result, a very good result here which is the eleventh overall shipment of plastics out of St. Kitts and Nevis. I urge all the public to continue your recycling practice, make it a daily habit and reduce the garbage on the island, which is good for your generation and the generations to come,” he said. The container is scheduled to leave Nevis next week. Residents are encouraged to follow the NSWMA’s social media platforms for updates on the recycling collection schedule for their respective communities and to ensure that recyclable plastics are properly sorted and prepared for collection.

Hon. Spencer Brand delivers World Post Day 2026 Address

NIA  /  0 comments

Honourable Spencer Brand Minister Responsible for Posts in the Nevis Island Administration World Post Day 2026 Address Fellow citizens and residents of Nevis, postal workers, stakeholders, ladies and gentlemen, greetings. Today, October 9, we join the international community in observing World Post Day 2026, under the theme, “One Postal Network. Infinite Possibilities.” The theme speaks to the changing role of postal services in a world that is increasingly digital, connected and dependent on the efficient movement of goods and information. For generations, the Post Office has been an important part of life in Nevis. It has connected families, supported businesses, delivered letters and packages, and provided a trusted link between our island and the wider world. However, the way we communicate, conduct business and receive goods is changing rapidly. People now communicate instantly across borders, online shopping has become part of everyday life, and businesses- large and small- can reach customers far beyond their immediate communities. These changes have also raised expectations for postal services that are efficient, reliable, secure and convenient. Our postal service must therefore evolve alongside the needs of the people we serve. Here on Nevis, the postal network is more than a system for receiving and dispatching letters and packages. It is part of the infrastructure that supports our economy, connects our communities and creates opportunities for our people. The growth of e-commerce, in particular, presents significant possibilities. A small business owner in Nevis should be able to produce a quality local product, market it online and have confidence that it can reach a customer elsewhere in the Caribbean or beyond. At the same time, our residents should be able to access goods from international markets and receive them through a postal service that is dependable and responsive. Technology can help us achieve this through improved package tracking, more efficient processing, better communication with customers and greater access to digital services. As Minister responsible for Posts in the Nevis Island Administration, I recognize that modernization must form an important part of the future of our postal service. But modernization is not only about technology. It is also about our people. Our postal employees must have the training, tools and working environment necessary to provide quality service. We must listen to our customers, understand their needs and continually look for ways to improve the service we provide. At the same time, as we embrace innovation, we must preserve the values that have earned the confidence of generations of customers- trust, reliability, accessibility and personal service. On this occasion, I wish to recognize the dedicated men and women of our postal service here on Nevis. Every day, you help keep our island connected. Whether processing mail, handling packages, assisting customers or ensuring that deliveries reach their destinations, your work makes an important contribution to families, businesses and communities across Nevis. On behalf of the Nevis Island Administration, and on my own behalf as Minister responsible for Posts, I extend sincere appreciation for your commitment, professionalism and continued service. Looking ahead, our focus must be on ensuring that the postal service is equipped to take advantage of developments in technology, logistics and e-commerce, while continuing to provide the dependable service that our people expect. With investment, innovation and strong partnerships, our postal network can contribute even more to enterprise, commerce and development on Nevis. That is the promise captured in this year’s theme: “One Postal Network. Infinite Possibilities.” It reminds us that a postal network is not simply about moving mail from one place to another. It is about creating connections and opening pathways to opportunity. As we mark World Post Day, let us celebrate the proud history of our postal service while embracing the possibilities that lie ahead for Nevis. On behalf of the Ministry responsible for Posts and the Nevis Island Administration, I extend best wishes to postal workers here on Nevis, throughout the Federation, and across the international postal community as we mark World Post Day 2026. Happy World Post Day, and God Bless!

The Ministry recently hosted a retirement seminar for prospective retirees from the public service. The seminar was designed to provide practical information and guidance to officers as they prepare for retirement and make a successful and informed transition into the next stage of their lives. Premier and Minister of Human Resources, the Honourable Mark Brantley, said the sessions are intended not only to help participants understand their retirement benefits, but also to provide practical guidance on managing and safeguarding their resources as they transition into retirement. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that civil servants are well informed and supported both during their careers and as they move into the next phase of their lives. “These sessions are of critical importance, so I want you all to see them as useful to you, giving you valuable information. They will tell you about your benefits, your pension benefits, your gratuity, about various mechanisms that are in place to assist you as you transition to the next phase.” Premier Brantley assured the participants that the Government would continue to educate and engage civil servants to help ensure they have rewarding careers and are equally prepared for life after the civil service. He said this was important to enabling the people of Nevis to live out their lives with dignity, noting that dignity requires having the resources necessary to meet their needs. Training Manager in the Ministry of Human Resources, Shanola Murray-Gill, said the session was intended to help participants prepare for a new chapter of their lives, highlighting the opportunities, experiences and fulfillment that can come beyond the corporate world. She encouraged them to embrace the transition and assured them that they would be supported throughout the process, including through continued professional guidance where necessary. “We want to ensure that you feel comfortable throughout the process, guided throughout the process and we wish you every success and full fulfillment in your journey and please know that we remain committed to support you professionally, where necessary.” The seminar featured presentations on the retirement process by Kevin Barrett, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Human Resources, and the computation of retirement benefits by Shenelle Dore, Treasurer in the NIA Treasury. Nevis Strengthens Financial Services Regulatory Regime with Passage of Four Bills

NIA  /  0 comments

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 6, 2026)- The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) continues to strengthen the regulatory framework for its growing financial services sector with the passage of four pieces of legislation in the Nevis Island Assembly on Tuesday, October 6. Minister of Finance and Premier the Honourable Mark Brantley piloted the four bills through the Assembly, noting that the government is committed to ensuring that Nevis’ regulatory framework remains fit for purpose. He introduced the Nevis Limited Partnership Ordinance (Amendment) Bill, 2026, for first reading. The Bill subsequently received second and third readings and was passed. Premier Brantley also led the second and third readings of the Companies Ordinance (Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Nevis Business Corporation Ordinance (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Nevis Limited Liability Company Ordinance (Amendment) Bill, 2026, all of which were passed. He said legislation had been passed to enhance the Nevis Limited Partnership, Nevis International Business Company, local company and, most recently, the Nevis Limited Liability Company, noting that while each was a distinct business structure, all formed an integral part of Nevis’ financial services sector. “We as a jurisdiction and as a government are seeking to monitor, regulate, and ensure that all entities, and I emphasize all entities, are operating in this jurisdiction in accordance with law, in accordance with the highest possible international standards… “We cannot talk about growth and development and expansion of the sector unless we are also talking about an effective regulatory regime. Regulation is now a critical part of any world-class financial services sector. In fact, it’s a critical part of any business nowadays, and we are very alive to that and we are making the necessary steps and putting in place what we need to do, including Madam President coming here from time to time for necessary amendments to strengthen the regime that exists.” Premier Brantley also thanked Opposition Members the Honourable Cleone Stapleton-Simmonds and the Honourable Dr. Janice Daniel-Hodge for their contributions to the debate.

Premier Brantley Meets with Iceland Drilling, COWI on Geothermal Drilling Preparations

NIA  /  0 comments

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 6, 2026)– Premier of Nevis and Minister of Energy, the Honourable Mark Brantley, received an update on preparations for geothermal drilling on Nevis during a meeting with representatives from Iceland Drilling and COWI, an international engineering consultancy, at his office at Pinney’s Estate on Tuesday. Premier Brantley met with Thorri Bjorn Gunnarsson, Civil Engineer with COWI, and Egill Arnar Sigurthorsson, Project Manager at Iceland Drilling. Also attending the meeting were Nelson Ald Stapleton, General Manager of the Nevis Electricity Company Limited (NEVLEC), and Wakely Daniel, Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Ministry. Premier Brantley said the meeting provided an opportunity to assess the project’s progress, address outstanding challenges and explore solutions to accelerate its implementation. He noted that the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) and all other parties recognise the need for the project to advance expeditiously, given its potential to be transformative for Nevis. “Where we are now is that the civil works need to be done, the water works need to be done, and so we’re trying to get a workaround bearing in mind that the various multinational agencies that we engage with, the funding agencies, that they sometimes have very lengthy processes and those processes are in fact anathema to us being able to move this project forward at pace.” He said the successful execution of the project could significantly advance the economic development of Nevis and the Federation. Mr. Stapleton described this renewable energy initiative as having the potential to be the “project of the decade for the region” and said NEVLEC is doing its part to help ensure its successful implementation. During their visit to the island, the representatives conducted an inspection of the geothermal drilling site at Hamilton ahead of the commencement of civil works for the well pad. The work is intended to ensure that the site is ready to receive the drilling rig, which is expected to be mobilised to Nevis in the near future. COWI is undertaking the civil works for the well pad, while Iceland Drilling Company will be responsible for carrying out the drilling.

Nevis’ Rondre Daniel heads to CTO Regional Tourism Youth Congress in Guyana

NIA  /  0 comments

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 02, 2026)– Nevis’ Youth Junior Minister of Tourism, Mr. Rondre Daniel, will travel to Guyana on Sunday, October 4, to represent the island at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Regional Tourism Youth Congress on Thursday, October 8. Daniel, a student of the Charlestown Secondary School, will join young tourism representatives from across the Caribbean at the regional event, which forms part of the CTO’s State of the Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC) 2026 being held in Georgetown from October 5 to 9. The Youth Congress brings together students between the ages of 14 and 17, each serving as a Junior Minister or Commissioner of Tourism for their respective destination. Ahead of his departure, Daniel met with Premier and Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Mark Brantley, at his office on Wednesday. Premier Brantley said the Nevis Island Administration values opportunities that expose young people to experiences that can contribute to their personal and professional development. He encouraged Daniel to focus on giving his best and representing Nevis well, while making the most of the opportunity to engage with young tourism representatives from across the region. “If you can win, we’ll be very happy. But what we are most happy about is that you do your best and that you represent to the best of your ability. If you walk out of that room and from that SOTIC experience and you are confident that you’ve done your best, then that is enough. “So I want to congratulate you and wish you the very best as you go off to Guyana to represent the people of Nevis.” Daniel thanked the Premier for his encouragement and asked for the continued prayers and support of the people of Nevis as he seeks to become the fourth representative from Nevis to capture the regional Youth Tourism Minister title. “I thank Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for allowing me to be able to have this opportunity. To win firstly on the local level, but now traveling regionally to Guyana is an amazing feat. “This experience, joining the Tourism Congress, is something I would recommend to any young person because you get information about Nevis that you never knew before. So, it’s a valuable experience and I hope when I go to Guyana that I will bring back the fourth championship to Nevis. I just want everyone to continue to keep me in your prayers and know that I will represent well.” Daniel emerged as the winner of the 2026 Bank of Nevis Tourism Youth Congress in May, earning the title of Nevis Junior Youth Tourism Minister and the opportunity to represent the island at the CTO Regional Tourism Youth Congress. His winning presentation focused on cultural industries innovation and outlined strategies aimed at strengthening Nevis’ tourism product through culture and creativity. He will travel to Guyana accompanied by his mother, Reverend Trecia Daniel; teacher chaperone, Mrs. Lencia Percival; and Ms. Akina Anthony of the Ministry of Tourism. The CTO Regional Tourism Youth Congress is one of the organisation’s signature youth development initiatives. It provides young people with an opportunity to research tourism issues, present innovative ideas and engage with their counterparts from across the Caribbean while developing critical thinking, communication and leadership skills. During the SOTIC, Daniel will also participate in a welcome reception, Future Leaders Forum, a Youth Congress social, two workshops, a destination tour, and a cultural night.

Phil Jones to strengthen regulation of Nevis’ Online Gaming Industry

NIA  /  0 comments

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 2, 2026)– The Nevis Branch of the Financial Services Regulatory Commission (FSRC) has designated Mr. Phil Jones as Regulator, Online Gaming, in recognition of the sector’s growing importance and continued expansion. He will lead efforts to maintain the robust supervisory and regulatory framework for the industry. Mr. Jones previously held responsibility for both international banking and online gaming regulation and formally handed over responsibility for international banking to Miss Marie-Grace Michel on October 1, 2026. During his tenure overseeing international banking, Mr. Jones helped to establish a strong foundation for the sector. With online gaming now his primary portfolio, the change will allow Mr. Jones to devote greater attention to its effective supervision, including oversight of the supervisory framework established under the Nevis Online Gaming Ordinance and compliance with the applicable requirements. The greater emphasis on online gaming comes as the industry continues to expand and as Nevis prepares for increased international scrutiny and oversight of its international financial services sector ahead of the fifth-round Mutual Evaluation. Strengthening supervisory capacity is critical to ensuring that Nevis remains responsive to evolving international standards and expectations. Mr. Jones will continue to work closely with the Nevis Online Gaming Authority, drawing on his regulatory background to strengthen oversight and ensure the industry operates within the established legal framework. The FSRC Nevis Branch will continue to maintain effective supervision of the jurisdiction’s financial services sector and uphold the standards required under the applicable laws and regulations.

Miss Michel assumed her new role on October 1, 2026, succeeding Mr. Phil Jones, who played a key role in developing the international banking regulatory framework in Nevis. Mr. Jones has now moved on to a new challenge focused on establishing the framework for the online gaming sector. Miss Michel’s appointment forms part of the NIA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the Nevis Financial Services Regulation and Supervision Department and support the continued development of the island’s international banking industry. Miss Michel brings a solid professional background in banking, auditing, financial services, financial crimes risk management, and Anti-Money Laundering, Countering the Financing of Terrorism and Countering Proliferation Financing (AML/CFT/CPF) compliance. EU Ready to Mobilise Financial Support for Nevis Geothermal Project

NIA  /  0 comments

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (October 01, 2026)– The European Union has signalled its willingness to partner with Nevis in advancing the island’s geothermal energy project, including through technical expertise and potential financial support. A high-level three-member delegation comprising David Mogollón, European Union Head of Cooperation to Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean States; Martino Vinci, Policy Officer for engagement with St. Kitts and Nevis; and Federico Fische of the EU Global Technical Assistance Facility for Sustainable Energy (EU GTAF), met with Nevis Island Administration officials in the NIA Cabinet Room on September 24. The NIA delegation included then Acting Premier the Honourable Spencer Brand; Legal Advisor Helene Lewis; Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Ministry Wakely Daniel; and NIA Energy Consultant Dr. Ernie Stapleton. Mogollón underscored the significance of the discussions and the potential regional impact of Nevis’ geothermal resource, noting that the initiative is important not only to the people of Nevis and the wider Federation, but also to the region, given the potential for other islands to benefit from the energy generated on Nevis. “The European Union is ready to partner and support this initiative and for that we are discussing with all the right stakeholders…because we are ready to bring expertise. We believe we have important know-how in the European Union when it comes to geothermal energy generation and transmission, to do the necessary analysis, engineering, etcetera so that we have the right figures, the right information and we consider all the different elements to make sure that this can be well executed and achieved. “We are ready to mobilise financial support as well, this is what we are deciding, what is the specific setup we are going to work together in to make that happen. We are ready to mobilize concessional loans, investment grants, and different modalities can be explored to ensure that we have the financial resources together to make sure that we get this project done.” Mogollón also said the EU has access to industrial partners and companies with experience in geothermal development, energy transmission and for the inter-island connectivity. He thanked the NIA for the excellent collaboration, saying the EU’s priority is what is good for the people of Nevis and the Federation and to see how the EU can be of help in that regard. Premier of Nevis and Minister of Energy, the Honourable Mark Brantley, welcomed the EU’s engagement on the critical renewable energy project. Speaking at his monthly press conference on September 29, Premier Brantley said the ongoing engagement relates to significant financing that the EU is seeking to make available for the project, not only at the local or national level, but also at the regional level. “The EU is trying to do a project where they connect Nevis; St. Kitts; the Dutch islands- Saba, Stacia, Sint Maarten; the French islands- St. Barths, St. Martin; then looking farther field to places like Antigua. They’re trying to work out a framework to see how that project can proceed. “They’ve had a number of discussions, I’m advised, with the Honourable Prime Minister [Dr. Terrance Drew] including discussions in Brussels, and they’ve now decided to bring the delegation here to meet with stakeholders at the NIA level…They’re trying to basically persuade us to partner with the EU on this project for a wider subregional project on geothermal and on energy security for the sub region.” Premier Brantley said the NIA would continue to assess the proposal, noting that other governments, including the United States Government, have also expressed interest in partnering on the geothermal initiative. “I feel that the people of Nevis and the wider federation should note that it is really the fact that this project is so transformative that these governments, these agencies, want to be a part of it. They want to play a role because they recognize the value of what geothermal energy exploration on the island of Nevis can mean. So that is something that we’re looking at and to see where that goes.” The Nevis Island Administration, through the Nevis Electricity Company Limited (NEVLEC), is advancing preparations for the next phase of the project at the Hamilton geothermal site. The project is being developed around a planned 30-megawatt geothermal power plant, which will provide reliable, clean and renewable electricity while reducing the island’s dependence on imported fossil fuels. The project is also expected to strengthen Nevis’ energy security, support lower and more stable electricity costs, and create opportunities to supply renewable energy to neighbouring islands through future regional interconnection.

Nevis Gender Affairs Expands SLAY Programme to Empower 14 Young Women

NIA CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (September 28, 2026)- The Nevis Island Administration (NIA), through its Department of Gender Affairs, is expanding its efforts to empower young girls through the Sisters Leading Ambitious Youth (SLAY) Girls Mentorship Programme, which has entered its second cohort with 14 participants under the theme “Stepping Into Greatness.” The programme seeks to equip girls with the confidence, knowledge, skills and positive support needed to make sound life choices, develop their potential and build a strong foundation for their future. SLAY was officially launched in 2025 at the Charlestown Secondary School with an initial group of eight girls. The second cohort has now expanded to include 14 students from both secondary schools on Nevis, comprising 11 students from the Gingerland Secondary School and three from the Charlestown Secondary School. The participants and their mentors of this second cohort were formally introduced during a recent ceremony at the Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park. The Gingerland Secondary School participants are Hadassah Greene, mentored by Tanisha Mills; Alliya Sugrim, mentored by Sabrina Orr; Malia Blake, mentored by Ayana McCalman; LeMya Charles, mentored by Andia Riviere; Zakiyah Stapleton, mentored by Sonia Martin; Paige Lord, mentored by Santonnya Mills; Zhareniyah Bartlett, mentored by Jeanette Robinson; Dwanequa Elliott, mentored by Leanne Browne; Kiara Wilkin, mentored by Nadine Carty; Kerzia Griffin, mentored by Santonnya Mills; and Naira Blake, mentored by Kaluwa Avril. Representing the Charlestown Secondary School are Tevisha Nisbett, mentored by Roxanne Brookes; Alexcia Browne, mentored by Melissia Allen; and Aliyah Merchant, mentored by Hurisa Martin. Minister of Gender Affairs in the NIA, the Honourable Senator Jahnel Nisbett, said the programme was designed to give young women opportunities to learn from the experiences and contributions of women who came before them. “This is exactly what the mentors, the program coordinators, the board of directors, this is what everyone has collaborated to do to ensure that you all have the best opportunity to be successful in life in whatever area you choose to pursue.” Minister Nisbett also commended the mentors for their commitment to the programme and the personal sacrifices they make to support the participants. “They’re sacrificing their work, their personal time, their families to commit to showing up for our young ladies each and every single time. So I want to give our mentors a round of applause.” The feature address was delivered by mentor Kaluwa Maitre-Avril, who encouraged the girls to embrace their individuality, recognise their worth and resist the temptation to compare themselves with others. “I want my young ladies here to know that there may always be somebody that looks prettier, thinner, taller, may have more Instagram followers on social media, but please understand their greatness certainly does not subtract from yours. We can all be great together. You do not have to become somebody else to be the most extraordinary version of yourself. So, I want you to know your worth before the world agrees with you. “Overcome fear. One of the things that I need you to learn very early is that it’s okay to be afraid, but I don’t want you to fear rejection. Don’t fear looking silly because you took the first step to do something brave. Say, “I am fearless.” Being fearless doesn’t mean that you will never be afraid. On the contrary, you will be afraid but just don’t stay in it and don’t be paralyzed by it.” Deputy Governor General for Nevis, Her Honour Hyleeta Liburd O.B.E., M.H., formally welcomed the mentees into the programme by pinning them with commemorative pins. The SLAY Girls Mentorship Programme focuses on the overall improvement of the lives of girls between the ages of 11 and 19 through mentorship, education, support and the protection of their human rights, regardless of their social or economic circumstances. Its activities are designed to foster meaningful relationships, build self-esteem and confidence, develop public-speaking skills, encourage appreciation, strengthen character and help participants work towards their personal goals. As part of the programme, the young women will participate in mentor-mentee engagements, vision-board workshops, paint-and-sip sessions, church services, cooking and baking activities, floral arranging and team-building exercises. The Department of Gender Affairs continues to use the programme to create opportunities for young girls to learn, grow and develop the confidence and life skills needed to pursue their aspirations.
