MUA/NIA Health Science scholarship awardees announced

NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (JULY 6, 2015) — Clayticia Daniel and Pearl Bergan are the recipients of the 2015 Medical University of the Americas (MUA)/Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Health Science Scholarship. The announcement was made on July 6, 2015, at a press briefing at the Ministry of Finance conference room.

Both awardees will be attending the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, Jamaica, for the fall semester. Daniel will pursue studies for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biotechnology and Bergan will pursue studies for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and member of the MUA/NIA Scholarship Selection Committee Nicole Slack-Liburd, congratulated the recipients. She remarked that those areas of study were essential to the development of Nevis.

“The two areas are priorities in tandem with the countries needs. Every year when the scholarship is announced, there are various priorities that are identified and these two young ladies have satisfied those needs,” she said.

In response, the recipients thanked the MUA/NIA Scholarship Selection Committee for affording them the opportunity to attend the UWI to further their studies and pledged to make their country proud.

Also present at the briefing was Assistant Secretary in the Premier’s Ministry Kevin Barrett. He is also a member of the MUA/NIA Scholarship Selection Committee, congratulated Daniel and Bergan on behalf of the selective committee.

He used the opportunity to extend an invitation to prospective applicants and urged them to be on the lookout for when next they could apply.

“I am encouraging all who are interested in going off to study to apply. It’s a scholarship that is of sizable amount and it is going to help financially,” he said.
