Ministry of Social Development Develops Adults’ Computer Skills
CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (September 9, 2010) — The Ministry of Social Development, under the leadership of the Honourable Hensley Daniel, on Monday, launched yet another programme geared towards the development of residents on Nevis.
A six-week adult computer class programme was launched at the Elizabeth Pemberton Laboratory in Brown Pasture as part of the Ministry’s quest to develop the skills of the people residing in the St. John’s parish.
“All we are seeking to do is to improve the capacity of people to find work.” This came at Monday evening’s launch in which the minister reviewed some of the developmental projects in the area and gave a sneak peak of his administration’s immediate plans.
“The course here falls in line with our general programme of development for this community. Last year we were here with courses in electrical wiring and now we’re here with computers. We still have a course to do in blueprint reading right at the school next door,” Minister Daniel said.
The programme is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Social Development and the International Women of Commitment who, according to Community Development Officer for the St. John’s Community Mr. Vernon Thomas, were instrumental in the programme’s development.
“The Ministry of Social Development has been working hard with the people of Nevis especially the young men along with partnership with the International Women of Commitment,” he said.
He added that although the programme was designed specifically for beginners, plans were being finalized towards the start of intermediate and advanced level computer classes for other persons in the community as well as graduates of the basic computer classes programme.
“Our aim and goal is to have these computer programmes and make sure at the very end all the participants will know their computers by heart, can send emails, can send documents to their friends, can print their own work,” Thomas said.
Classes are $5 per session and are being offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-7 PM. The programme is expected to end on October 13th.
