CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (September 13, 2010) — Nevisian-born Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, the Honourable Hugh Rawlins was among the distinguished guests who made remarks at last Friday’s [September 10, 2010] official opening ceremony of the Eastern Caribbean Law Fair.

Rawlins along with President of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States [OECS] Bar Association Tapley Seaton CVO QC, commended the St. Kitts-Nevis Bar Association for its diligence and instrumentality in hosting this year’s Law Fair.

“I wish to place on record a special word of thanks for the very kind and ready assistance which has been offered by the local bar association: the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar and so certainly I’d wish to thank the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar for coming to the fore and offering the assistance in terms of having a successful Law Fair,” Seaton said.

Seaton also spoke of his association’s quest for constant growth and development and saw the hosting of the Law Fair as a step in the right direction.

“We in the OECS continue to look for opportunities to expand our horizons. We recognise that our courts have been face with increasing burdens in terms of the law as we know it and in terms, also, of challenges that may be faced in terms of the interfacing of the state and courts and so we certainly as lawyers prepare to look at these issues and to see how we can assist in furthering the administration of justice,” Seaton said.

Rawlins used the opportunity to highlight the importance of the Law Fair and spoke of the benefits it had brought to judges and attorneys in the Eastern Caribbean.

“It is always an absolute pleasure to be here for this very uplifting occasion. The occasion of the Law Fair and now we are in the seventh year and so, for some years, having put on to that the symposium which is a judicial and Bar endeavour: not only working in tandem and in cooperation but also for the education and educational purposes of all of us,” Rawlins said.

The ceremony was held at the Lee Llewelyn Moore Judicial and Legal Services Complex in St. Kitts and formed part of celebrations to mark the start of the new law term which begins today.

Remarks were also made by Former Past President of the OECS Bar Association Dr. Joseph Archibald, QC and President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Bar Association Charles Wilkin, QC.
