Ministry of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs to hold training seminar

NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (June 09, 2016) —  The following is a press release from the Ministry of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs regarding a Caribbean Forum-European Union (CARIFORUM-EU) Competition Law and Policy Training Seminar in Basseterre. The release is dated June 13, 2016.
 
The Ministry of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, together with the Caribbean Competition Commission, is hosting a training seminar on Competition Law and Policy on Monday June 13, 2016, at the Customs and Excise Department.
 
This introductory Level I training programme, is designed to raise knowledge and awareness of Competition Law and Policy, and build institutional capacity within St. Kitts and Nevis in the context of the implementation of the CARIFORUM-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).
 
The target stakeholders include public and private sector organisations (chamber of commerce, cooperative groups and associations), professional bodies (medical, legal, etc.), sector regulators, and public sector owned companies, media organisations, consumer organisations and academia.
 
This training forms part of a 10th European Development Fund (EDF) project for capacity building within CARIFORUM, in support of the implementation of commitments given under the CARIFORUM-EU Economic Partnership Agreement.
 
The training will be delivered by a competition expert from the CCC selected by the consulting firm Equinoccio, which has been contracted to execute the 10th EDF project for capacity building within Member States of CARIFORUM.
 
The Ministry of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, has a mandate to promote, maintain and encourage fair competition and to prohibit the prevention, restriction or distortion of competition. The CCC has a similar mandate under Chapter 8 of the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas (RTC) for competition within the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).
 
The Ministry of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, welcomes the collaboration between CARIFORUM and the EU to deliver this training initiative and looks forward to future partnerships in the area of competition law and policy.
