NIA 2014 Budget passes unopposed
NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (December 23, 2013) — The $171,023,719 budget that would carry out the operations of the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) in 2014 was passed unopposed in the Nevis Island Assembly on December 20, 2013, two days after the Budget Address was presented by Premier of Nevis and Minister of Finance Hon. Vance Amory.
Based on Capital budgetary allocations, the Ministry of Communications and Works, Public Utilities, Posts, Physical Planning, Natural Resources and Environment would receive the largest allotment of $30,685,000.
During the Budget Address, Mr. Amory noted that the NIA, through the Ministry of Communications and Works, had planned to engage in a properly run road programme.
“In 2014, it is our intension to carry out a well managed road programme which will facilitate inclusive growth and employment in the Nevis economy.
“We will complete the Hanley’s Road Rehabilitation Project, Taylor’s Pasture and Shaws Road which are necessary for immediate infrastructural improvement and your Government will engage in a significant rehabilitation of the Island Main Road in the Cades Bay to Cotton Ground areas,” he said.
That Ministry was also allocated a further $10,121,869 under the Recurrent and Non-Recurrent section of the 2014 Budget.
Under other Capital allocations, the Ministry of Health will receive $4,150,000 while the Ministry of Education and Library Services will receive $2,975,000. The Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and Cooperatives will receive $1,860,000.
A total of $1,651,209 was allocated to the Ministry of Finance, Statistics and Economic Planning while the Ministry of Tourism will receive a $1,333,311 budget allocation.
$1,033,000 was set aside for the Ministry of Social Development, Youth, Sports, Community Development and the Premier’s Ministry will receive $485 million.
