CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (October 12, 2010) — Grade Four-B [4B] student at the St. Thomas’ Primary School, Ms. Dahlia Slack is expected to represent Nevis on October 14^th in the federation’s reading competition in St. Kitts.

Slack proved victorious over other students on Nevis by capturing the first place award in the local reading competition held last Friday [October 8^th 2010] at the Red Cross Building in Charlestown.

Reading Specialist within the Ministry of Education Mrs. Palsy Wilkin chaired the event and said that Courts in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States [OECS] territories had partnered with the ministries of education to bring about the competition which sought “to have one student represent each territory and have a final competition [in Grenada].”

The competition, which saw students reading two pieces: one seen item and an unseen item, “assessed the reading fluency, accuracy, enunciation, smoothness, confidence and expression of the participant.”

The representatives from the Charlestown and St. James Primary schools tied in second place while the Bellevue International School placed third.

The reading competition started in Dominica where Courts partnered with the media and hosted an island-wide competition.
