Nevis to observe International Youth Day 2016
NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (AUGUST 11, 2016) – Director of Youth Development in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Zahnela Claxton, announced on August 11, 2016, that in recognition of International Youth Day on August 12, 2016, the Department of Youth and Sports will host an awareness activity at the Memorial Square in Charlestown.
It will be held under this year’s International Youth Day theme “The road to 2030; eradicating poverty and achieving sustainable consumption and production.”
The event will be from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Department will be recording the youth on Nevis interested in highlighting how they think they can be agents of change on Nevis. They will also be asked to complete the statement “I matter because…”
During the event, participants will be registered and data and information will be collected in an effort to stay in contact and to keep them abreast with the opportunities available to them.
Claxton explained the reason for the awareness campaign, citing that the youth will be the future leaders of Nevis and it was one way of keeping them interested and motivated.
“We want to continue to record and document these words of encouragement from our young people. We want other young people to feel motivated, that they too, can make a difference in the push for sustainability, for sustainable development.
“We are setting down all of the foundational tools for everything that we need, for Nevis to continue to grow and to strive. The ball is in the court of the young people,” she said.
She also invited the public to participate in the event.
“Come ready to encourage all our young people, not just here on Nevis but throughout the Caribbean, throughout the world,” she said.
